Abstract

The review examines the book Transformations of Sexuality and Gender in the Thai Perspective: Politics, Media, and Citizenship, by Porranee Singpliam, highlighting the native concept "phet" as a way of thinking about sex/gender outside Western categories. The reviewer, a Brazilian researcher, links the Thai work to Latin American scholars — Lugones, Segato, Hirata, Akotirene, and Curiel — drawing connections across Global South gender studies: the coloniality of gender binarism, the intersection of gender and class, the persistence of institutional patriarchy, and the importance of situated epistemologies written by queer people about their own experiences. The review proposes a South-South dialogue between Southeast Asia and Latin America in gender studies.
