Abstract

This article is a cultural critique of the Invisible City series (2021), directed by Carlos Saldanha
and produced by Netflix. Its objective is to reflect on the tensions and challenges that permeate
the adaptation of folklore to a new media, in a fundamentally folkmediatic process. Inserted
in the tensions between identity recognition and narrative disputes, the series becomes a
paradigmatic example for understanding the contemporary conflicts that permeate the
field: the endless search for what’s supposedly, “legitimate”; the limitations inherent to the
crystallization of oral narratives plurality; the confusion between tradition and fiction, and the
mutual illumination between source-text and its adaptation.
Key words: folklore; adaptation; invisible city; myth
